Job Outlook in Homeland Security and Counter Terrorism Agencies
Following the tragic September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America government and private agencies began to develop and expand their counter terrorism units. This has created a new sector of job growth and opened up high paying career opportunities for many individuals.
In the 1980's the CIA evaluated the current government agencies and what they were doing to prevent terrorism and determined that they were collecting a lot of data but not aggressively combating terrorism. Resonding to this finding, the CIA implemented a counter terrorism unit called the Counterterrorist Center (CTC) in response to escalating threats of international terrorism. Basically, the CTC operates a comprehensive counter terrorism program that collects intelligence and provides an thorough analysis of the data that results in the minimizing of international terrorism. The CTC also works to coordinate the counter terrorism community's activities.
The Director of Central Intelligence, in 1990, established the Interagency Intelligence Committee on Terrorism (IICT). The IICT includes different government agencies, security, law enforcement, regulatory and defense communities. The IICT assists the CIA with coordinating national and international intelligence to effectively counter terrorism. Together the CTC and IICT pursue terrorists and help the FBI bring them to justice.
As you can see there are a number of different agencies that are involved in the war on terror and therefore many different areas to find a career. The aforementioned counter terrorism agencies are just a few of the many needed to fight the war against terrorism. There is a cooperative partnership with state and local governments as well as with the private and not-for-profit sectors. These agencies require, at minimum, an associate's degree and training in counter terrorism. Careers in counter terrorism agencies are exciting and pay well and for this reason job openings are very competitive. Stay competitive with an advanced degree from one of the online schools below.
