California Highway Patrol / CHP - Employment Information
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) hires on a continual basis, accepting applications and offering testing around the state all year long. The application and testing process can take six to twelve months. The majority of graduates from the CHP Academy are assigned to larger cities in California with Los Angeles and San Francisco being the most common assignments.
Minimum Qualifications Required to Become a CHP Officer
Applicants must be between the ages of 20 and 35, vision must be at least 20/40 and able to be corrected to 20/20 in each eye, possess a high school diploma or equivalent (the CHP considers it highly desirable to possess an associate's degree or higher in any field), posses a valid California Driver's License, have no felony convictions, be a United States citizen or a permanent resident immigrant who will be a US citizen at time of appointment to the CHP Academy. California Highway Patrol Salary / Wage Scale
Everyone attending the California Highway Patrol Academy earns the same base salary of $3,871 a month. While attending the CHP Academy, Cadets have free room and board. After attending the Academy for one month, Cadets receive full health and dental benefits for themselves and their dependents. After graduation from the Academy, CHP Officers earn a base salary of $61,452 calculated annually. CHP Officers earn a 5% raise on their base salary each year for the first five years until they reach a "top step" salary of $74,524 annually. Overtime is earned in addition to base salary and can often add an additional $10,000 annually to an Officer's base salary.
CHP Officers can also earn incentive pay, which is based on different sets of criteria and adds an additional percentage increase to their monthly salary. Pilots earn a percentage increase called Flight Pay and Shift Differential pay for night and swing shifts earns a percentage increase. Canine Handlers are given $156.65 a month for care of their K-9 in addition to the Department building a kennel at the Officer's House. Bilingual Incentive pay is $100 a month if the Officer is certified bilingual by the Department. Educational Incentive Pay is 2.5% of base salary for those Officers with an Intermediate POST Certificate or Associate's Degree and 5% for those Officers who have a Bachelor's Degree or an Advanced POST Certificate. Field Training Officers earn an additional 5% of their base pay for each Day they are in the field with a trainee. Vehicle theft and Fraud investigators earn Investigator Incentive pay of $50 a month. Motorcycle Officers earn an Incentive Pay of a 4% addition to their base pay.
In addition to base salary, overtime and Incentive Pay, CHP Officers are provided with safety and protective equipment, retirement, health care and dental benefits for their dependents, accrued sick days, and accrued vacation days.
