EPA Special Agent Career
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Special Agents work in the EPA's Criminal Investigations Division. They are responsible for enforcing the United State's environmental laws which cover air, water and land resources. They also are federal sworn law enforcement agents that will enforce any other federal law.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Special Agents did not come in off the street with no education or experience. This is, in most cases, a promotable position or a position that other federal law enforcement agents or military veterans may transfer into. According to the EPA website, required qualifications for consideration include at least one year of specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-12 level in the Federal government. General requirements for this position also include be a U.S. Citizen, be 37 years of age or younger, be able to get security clearance, qualified to carry a firearm, and applicant must have completed Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) or an equivalent law enforcement training program.

How to Become an EPA Special Agent
Most federal agencies will require applicants to hold a bachelor's degree as well as possess work experience. The EPA special agent position, as mentioned above, is not an entry level career. Federal law enforcement positions are very competitive and applicants almost always, unless they have certain desired skill sets, will have to take positions that get the in the door and then apply for transfers or promotable opportunities. The same sits true with the EPA. There are many opportunities to join the EPA, however they are not in law enforcement. Technology, science/research (biology, forensic science, environmental sciences, chemistry, etc.), accounting, business administration, finance or public administration bachelor's degree programs all provide skills needed by the EPA and other federal agencies.
The competition for EPA Special Agent positions is very competitive, just as it is with most federal law enforcement positions. Earning a bachelor's degree and working in an entry-level position at the EPA, another federal agency or in law enforcement are considerations that may make you more competitive for an EPA Special Agent position. The experience gained working for a federal agency, such as the Environmental Protection Agency, is invaluable and once you demonstrate your knowledge and skills, additional opportunities may present themselves.
