Loss Prevention Specialist - Career Information

Job Description

This career takes an interest in criminal justice and working in the retail sector. In the retail sector, loss prevention specialists or detectives will often conduct surveillance on foot or video, recommend ways to improve security and prevent loss, train new and existing employees in security and loss prevention, perform safety evaluations, perform interviews and interrogations, and many other functions pertaining to loss prevention in retail.

Education Requirements

Depending on the size of the corporation and job responsibilities, employers will require an associate's or bachelor's degree. Some entry-level positions with less responsibility will require just a high school diploma or equivalent, but will of course pay much less. Promotable positions to management or director levels will often require advanced education. A degree in criminal justice provides the necessary training and skills needed to become a loss prevention specialist.

Billions of dollars are lost to shoplifters and employee theft each year in the retail sector. Employers are facing even more losses as the economy continues to decline. According to Randy Woodson, director of security at a large outdoor shopping mall in Nevada, "In this weakened economy, we have seen the rates of retail theft increase significantly." Employers are looking at ways to limit their losses and one way they have addressed this need is by hiring loss prevention specialists or detectives, creating quite a demand. Those with a background in criminal justice have found and will continue to find the greatest opportunities according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
