Atlanta Police Officer Job Description
Atlanta police officers maintain a presence in communities through out the city limits protecting residents and property from crime and enforcing the law. They patrol on foot, bike, helicopter, car, motorcycle and other means. Police officers will investigate emergency calls, conduct investigations, testify in court, keep current on training and any new laws ordinances that pass, stay physically fit, and conduct many other related duties.
Atlanta Police Academy Training, Prerequisites and Educational Requirements
The most common degree for a police officer is a bachelor's in criminal justice. The Atlanta Police Dept requires applicants to be 20 years old, a U.S. citizen, GED or equivalent, valid driver's license, no "class A" misdemeanor or felony, no "b class" misdemeanor in last 10 years and to pass an intense background investigation and physical testing. Earning an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree will set you apart from other candidates. Once accepted to the Atlanta Police Department you will attend training at the Atlanta PD academy for 21 weeks and will earn a full salary. The next 240 hours of training will be in the field with an Atlanta PD field training officer where all skills learned at the academy will be applied.

The Atlanta Police Department pays new recruits $34,045, Police Officers with a high school diploma between $38,556 and $52,549, Police Officers with an associate's degree between $39,906 and $54,388, and Police Officers with a Bachelor's degree between $41,303 and $56,291.
