The Charleston Police Department is comprised of 382 sworn police officers, 137 civilians and 27 reserve police officers. The Charleston Police have been recognized nationally and locally for their service and are considered one of the most distinguished departments in the country. The Charleston Police dept. is currently accepting applications for Charleston police officers. All applicants must possess a bachelor's degree. Requirements for Applying and Becoming a Charleston Police Officer

4) Possession of a valid driver's license
5) no convictions for DUI or leaving the scene of an accident.

City of Charleston Police Benefits and Salary

The Charleston police offer very competitive salaries for new recruits, $35,230 - $44,285 depending on education and experience. Benefits include Insurance, Holidays, Military Leave, Retirement and Lateral Entry.

Charleston Police Training

New recruits will attend a two week orientation at the Charleston Police Dept. before attending an intensive 9 week training program at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. They will then be assigned to a certified field training officer on uniform patrol.
