Forensic Science Education

Forensic science degrees, as mentioned above, offer curriculum options depending on the area of forensic science you are interested in. Criminal justice degree programs with a concentration in forensic science, such as the BSCJ in forensic science at American InterContinental University, offer a foundation in criminal justice with concentration courses in forensic psychology and forensic science applications to criminal investigations. Other courses that students may take in a forensic science minor or concentration program include advanced math, chemistry, biology, psychology, evidence collection, courtroom presentation and sociology. Again, this type of degree program prepares students for forensic science field work in a law enforcement setting.

Students interested in working in a crime lab analyzing evidence with limited or no time in the field at crime scenes may want to pursue a bachelor's degree in forensic science with specialty focuses such as, forensic chemistry or forensic biology. A biology, biochemsitry or chemistry bachelor's degree are also excellent choices for forensic science crime lab careers. Forensic science degrees with a specialty focus in chemistry will include courses in organic and inorganic chemistry, toxicology and trace. A degree in forensic science with a chemistry focus prepare students for all areas of a forensic lab careers. A degree in forensic science with a biology focus will include courses in genetics, biochemistry, microbiology and immunology among others. A specialty focus in forensic biology will also prepare students for all areas of a crime lab career, but forensic biology graduates most often work with DNA.

As mentioned above, this is a very competitive field. Earning excellent grades and volunteering/internships are great ways to set yourself apart and make connections in the forensic science and law enforcement community prior to graduation. Finding an entry-level job in a forensic science lab can be a lot easier if you are willing to relocate and work in any area of the crime lab. Additional certification and training may be prerequisites for some positions.
