Law Enforcement Careers

A career in law enforcement is one of the most rewarding paths an individual can take. There are also risks associated with a career in law enforcement and to be successful in this field one must accept those risks and rely on the education and training they have received.

A large portion of law enforcement agencies are beginning to require their applicants to possess a college degree, at least a 2-year degree. Many police departments are moving in this direction to the discontent of many public public figures. There are already significant shortages of police officers in many areas, primarily the rural parts of the United States and departments that start requiring a bachelor's degree can further limit the applicant pool. Federal agencies already require a bachelor's degree for most law enforcement related positions.

What all this means is that an education will not hinder anyone's aspirations for a career in law enforcement. Infact, a degree can significantly increase starting and current salaries. Below you will find a shortened list of typical law enforcement jobs along with their median annual salaries:

Police Patrol Officer $45,780 /year
Correction Officer $31,583 / year
Security Guard $31,393 / year
Sheriff/Police Chief $87,534 / year
Police Sergeant $58,440 / year
Fire Inspector $47,674 / year
