New York State Police Officer Training, Prerequisites and Educational Requirements

The New York Police Department requires applicants to be 21 years old, a U.S. citizen on or before the date of hire, completion of 60 hours of college credit (Associate's Degree) with a G.P.A. of 2.0 or better at an accredited college or university, possession of a valid New York driver's license, and to pass an intense background investigation and physical testing. Earning an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree will set you apart from other candidates.

New York Police Officer Salary and Job Outlook

New NYPD recruits start receiving full pay and benefits from the first day of recruit training ($35,881 per year). Upon the completion of the NYPD Police Academy (six months), the annual salary increases to $32,700. Salaries increase every year and after 5½ years of service, the base salary increases to $65,382. In addition to these base salaries, there is overtime earning, holiday pay, night differential and uniform allowance. The NYPD website also reports that detectives and sergeants earn an average salary of $100,000 annually and lieutenants have an average annual salary of $122,000.
