Reno Police Officer Job Description
Reno police officers patrol the city of Reno, keeping its residents safe. RPD officers often will interview and interrogate suspects, investigate crimes, support victims, respond to the scene of an accident, write reports based on their daily activities, work special events and many other duties. Reno police officers patrol on foot, by car, on motorcycle and by horse. To get a feel for what a day in the life of a Reno police officer is really like, the department offers police ride alongs. There is an application procedure to complete prior to any ride along. The application can be found on the RPD website.
Reno Police Officer Training, Prerequisites and Educational Requirements
The Reno Police requires applicants to be 21 years old, a U.S. citizen, GED, valid driver's license, not to have been convicted of a felony in Nevada, not been convicted of an offense involving moral turpitude or the unlawful use, possession, or sale of a controlled substance, no conviction of physical violence and to pass an intense background investigation and physical testing. Earning an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree will set you apart from other Reno PD candidates. Being able to speak a second language fluently is a definite plus for applicants. Once accepted to the Reno PD you will attend training at the academy and will earn a full salary. After completing training at the academy you will be in the field with a field training officer where all skills learned at the academy will be applied.
Reno Police Officer Salary and Job Outlook
The Reno PD salaries are comparable to the national average. Promotional opportunities with the Reno Police Department are available. The Reno PD also provides $1000 per year education reimbursement and educational incentives. The Bureau of Labor Statistics also reports that there will be a continued high demand for police officers through 2012 and possibly longer.
Some advanced career paths for police officers include sergeant, lieutenant, chief, crime scene technician, and others. Most of these promotions or specialties require advanced education or certification.
