A gaming surveillance officer is most often employed by casinos and casino hotels. There are some state and federal agencies that employ a smaller number of surveillance agents or officers to observe casinos are following state and federal gaming laws. Also known as surveillance agents, gaming surveillance officers in a casino utilize high tech audio and visual instruments to observe patrons and employees, such as facial recognition software to identify cheaters and other unwanted guests in the casino. Some old-school technology is still implemented in many casinos, such as walking catwalks above the casino floor in the ceiling where they can look for irregularites through two-way mirrors. Many time surveillance officers act as security agents to assist customers and keep order throughout the casino. A recent job posting for a gaming surveillance officer listed this job description "maintains close-watch surveillance on all casino table games, simulcast and slot machine activity through a monitoring system. Responds to casino activity and utilizes necessary equipment to identify, record and document illegal and unusual activities occurring in the casino, slot machines, slot booths and cage areas."

Surveillance Officer Salary, Job Outlook and Requirements

Most gaming surveillance officer jobs require a GED or high school diploma and the more popular casinos like to see at least a year of surveillance experience. The gaming surveillance officer jobs in the more popular casinos are more competitive positions due to the higher salaries and promotional opportunities within the casino. An associate or bachelor degree in criminal justice or related field can open up many more opportunities into management and other higher paying positions within the surveillance industry. The Bureau of Labor Statistic in 2005 reported the median annual wage for a gaming surveillance officer or gaming investigator was $25,870 and that job opportunities would increase through 2014, especially with proposed legalization of gambling in more states.
