United States Park Police
The US Park Police is part of the Department of the Interior National Park Service. They have jurisdiction and provide law enforcement services in National Parks as well as in some other federal and state locations. Primarily, they operate in Washington D.C., San Francisco and New York City preventing and responding to criminal acts, patrolling, investigating crimes, apprehending suspects, protecting the Nation's monuments and memorials and other law enforcement related duties. Officers can also be assigned to any National Park in the country. The United States Park Police also provides escort and protective details for the President of the United States and other foreign and domestic dignitaries. They protect some of America's most beautiful locations, are some of the most well-trained and specialized law enforcement personnel and have a very prestigious background. Because of this, becoming a US Parks Police Officer is one of the most competitive law enforcement positions in the country. Earning an associate degree in criminal justice can help you meet the educational requirements for becoming a police officer as well as help you be more competitive in the application process.
Becoming a US Park Police Officer
Applicants must be between the ages of 21 and 31, be a US citizen, correctable vision to 20/20, have 2 years of experience that demonstrates a progressing trend of responsibilities related to the field of law enforcement or two years of education past high school, such as an associate degree, possess a valid driver's license, pass a written examination, pass physical fitness related exams, be submitted to a thorough background investigation and related requirements. The 2 year experience requirement can be substituted with education at the rate of 1 year of education (30 units) for 1 year of experience. An Associate Degree in Criminal Justice can help you meet the 2-year education requirement. Internships with the National Park Service is a great way to learn more about the career as well as make contacts in the agency. Applications are only accepted when testing is announced by the Office of Personnel Management.
US Park Police Units
There are a variety of options for the police officers once they finish their training including Traffic and Operations, Horse-Mounted Division, Special Forces-Aviation Unit, Environmental Crimes Unit, Special Forces-SWAT, Special Forces-Canine Unit, Identification Unit (Forensics), Special Forces-Intelligence Unit (works with Homeland Security), Special Forces-Motorcycle Unit (provides Presidential and dignitary escorts in DC and San Francisco) and various district patrol units in the Washington DC, San Francisco and New York areas.
