Forensic Psychology Master's Programs
There are a growing number of master's degree in forensic psychology specific programs in the United States, though they are few and far between and extremely selective. Many of the top forensic psychologists currently working in the field never attended one of the schools offering a specialized master's in forensic psychology program. Training recommendations from experts in the field include gaining knowledge in abnormal psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, motivational psychology and clinical psychology. Matthew T. Huss, PhD, an assistant professor at Creighton University, recommends that "in order to be a good forensic psychologist, you must first be a good clinical psychologist." After all, the forensic psychologist is defined as a licensed clinical psychologist who applies psychology to legal matters.
It's possible to complete a master's program in an area of psychology and then receive forensic training by way of an internship at a mental hospital, a correctional facility or a related institution while pursuing a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and then a post doctorate forensic psychology specialization. Fellowships will also be critical to clinical and theoretical knowledge. What is being said here is that, though it is desirable to have a master's or PhD in forensic psychology, there are ways to become a forensic psychologist without attending one of these specialized programs.
