Schools Offering Paralegal Programs in Alabama

Campus based programs are offered in Alabama's metropolitan centers, including Montgomery, Birmingham, Mobile, and Gadsden. Online paralegal programs are popular with working adults and offer a flexible alternative to campus based programs. At this time there are no online paralegal programs approved by the American Bar Association (ABA) and only six ABA approved campus based programs are found in the state of Alabama.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Paralegal School

Larger firms in Alabama's metropolitan locations may require a bachelor's degree and work experience in an area of law that the firm is involved in. Some firms only hire individuals that earned their degree from an ABA approved school and have specific work experience. The larger firms in Alabama do compensate their paralegals quite well, justifying the requirements for the paralegals they hire. Smaller law firms, real estate and title offices, government offices, banks, hospitals and related businesses employing paralegals will hire entry-level paralegals in most cases. Inquire with the employer you would like to work for as to what their requirements are for hiring paralegals.

"A good way to gain experience is to intern or work at a law firm while attending a paralegal program, so that you will have some experience under your belt prior to applying to a law firm. Many paralegals start out at smaller law firms, real estate companies, police departments, title companies, etc. to gain experience prior to coming to our firm." Comments Angie Estrada (15+ years in the legal field), Human Resource Manager for a large law firm in Birmingham.

When evaluating schools consider their accreditation and other educational standards such as ABA approval and membership in the American Association for Paralegal Education or another national paralegal association. Also, make sure they offer student services such as job placement, academic counseling and career counseling.
