Paralegal Programs in Colorado

As of October, 2008 there are no education, regulation, continuing education or licensure requirements for paralegals in Colorado. There has been ongoing discussions between the Colorado Bar Association (CBA), the Paralegal Committee of the Colorado Bar Association and the Rocky Mountain Paralegal Association / National Affairs Committee (RMPA NAC) as to guidelines for utilization of paralegals, education, licensure, regulation and related topics.

What to Consider When Choosing a Paralegal Program

The most important thing you can do at this point is assess your career goals and determine where you would like to work as a paralegal. Contact the human resources department at your desired place of employment and as what their hiring requirements are for paralegals. Ask them if they require prior work experience in the legal field, if they prefer paralegal graduates from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved program or if it matters and if they will consider entry-level paralegals.

Employers in Colorado will have different requirements for their paralegal positions. Generally employers will look for paralegals with a formal education, training, and experience. Desired experience is the area that will vary most. Large fortune 500 firms, such as those in downtown Denver, will often seek paralegals with at least 3 to 5 years of work experience in an area of law they practice as well as a paralegal certificate or degree and/or a 4 year college degree. A single lawyer practice in a less metropolitan area of Colorado, a government agency, a real estate or title company may not require any prior work experience and hire an entry-level paralegal.

Though an ABA approved paralegal program often conveys a sense of legitimacy, many of the 1200 or so paralegal programs across the country offer programs that are just as qualified as an ABA approved program but the school has chosen not to pursue approval due to cost considerations. The Colorado State Bar does not have position or a preference for an ABA approved paralegal program graduate or a non-ABA approved paralegal program graduate. The Colorado State Bar recognizes that since there are only 4 ABA approved programs in Colorado, these most likely are not the most convenient locations for everyone in the state looking to attend a paralegal program.
