Consider This When Choosing a Paralegal Program in Delaware
One of the most important things you should do prior to choosing a paralegal program is to inquire with any potential employers as to what their requirements are for hiring paralegals. Employers do not require their paralegals to have certification in Delaware, however choosing a paralegal program that meets the Delaware Paralegal Associations qualifications will assure that you have the opportunity to pursue certification in the future.
Typical paralegals in Delaware will conduct research for projects, write motions and pleas as well as aide attorneys with trial preparation. The majority of law firms do not want to spend time and money training entry-level paralegals to do these tasks that are pretty standard for any paralegal that has a year of experience under his or her belt. Most large law firms will require their paralegals to have at least one year of work experience in the legal field, preferably in an area of law that the firm is involved in.
Sandy Jacobs, a Human Resources Administrator at a large firm in Delaware, suggests that students "find an internship, most are unpaid, at a local firm or one that you would like to work for in the future. This will give you real word work experience as well as develop a network of contacts for jobs after you graduate."
American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal programs are highly regarded by employers in Delaware as well as around the country. However, regional or national accreditation also carries legitimacy and prestige as well as a less expensive tuition. Many non-ABA paralegal programs would meet the criteria for an ABA approved paralegal program, but those schools have chosen not to pursue this approval based on the cost to apply for approval and maintain that approval. These costs are passed on to the students in ABA approved paralegal programs. That is something to strongly consider. Also, there are only around 250 ABA approved paralegal programs in the country, which can create a problem for anyone not near a campus.
Consider an online paralegal program or a campus based program that has national or regional accreditation as an alternative, if an ABA approved paralegal program is not convenient. Read more about ABA versus non-ABA approved paralegal programs. Listed below are a variety of online paralegal programs including their accreditation information. Check each school for tuition, students services, financial aid, length of program and do they offer job placement assistance. Research these programs along with others you find before making your decision.
