Paralegal Programs in Kansas

The state of Kansas has no regulations or requirements in place for paralegal education. There are colleges and universities within the state offering various levels of paralegal education to choose from. There are two schools offering American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal programs in Kansas and three schools that are members of the American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE). There are also online paralegal programs accredited by national and regional accrediting agencies, designed for Kansas residents.

Important Considerations When Choosing a Paralegal Program in Kansas

Consider choosing a paralegal program that is ABA approved, an AAfPE member or a program offered through a school that is accredited by a national or regional accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. Though this is not a requirement in the state of Kansas, nor a requirement by the majority of employers in Kansas, these programs offer a legitimacy recognized by employers as well as professionals in the field. Accreditation, ABA approval or membership in the AAfPE also offers a confidence that the program will teach the needed practical job skills and legal theory to prepare for a successful career as a paralegal. Paralegals with formal education and previous work experience in the legal field often have the best opportunities for finding employment in the metropolitan areas of Kansas including Overland Park, Topeka, Kansas City and Wichita. Many employers are looking for paralegals with previous work experience and one way to meet the desired experience is to intern while earning a paralegal education. Often schools will help you arrange this internship or even require it as part of their paralegal program. Either way, find an employer you might want to work for and try for the internship with them. Many times paralegals are hired on where they did their internship.

When discussing programs with the colleges and universities ask about the student services they offer. Student services should, at least, include financial aid, academic counseling, career counseling, and job placement assistance. Ask about their curriculum. Look for courses that cover legal research and writing, litigation, ethics, critical thinking, and contracts. Also, ask about their legal research library or access to online legal research tools such as Westlaw.

Before choosing any program it is a good idea to contact potential employers to find out what their requirements are for their paralegals, as far as education and work experience. This will give you a feel for what is going on in the work force as well as what type of program you should be choosing.
