Paralegal Programs in Maine

There are no regulations or requirements set by the state for a paralegal's education. Paralegal certification through a national association, such as the National Federation of Paralegal Associations' Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE) or the National Association of Legal Assistants' Certified Legal Assistant Exam (CLA/CP), will require a certain level of education and or work experience, so this is something to keep in mind. Currently there are no American Bar Association approved paralegal programs in Maine, however neighboring states do have schools offering approved programs. There are nationally and regionally accredited online schools that offer convenient and well recognized online paralegal programs in Maine that are worth researching in addition to campus based options.

What to Consider When Choosing a Paralegal Program

The American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE) recommends choosing a school that is a member of the AAfPE (there are two in Maine and four in New Hampshire, more information can be found below), choosing an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal program, or choosing a program offered at a school that is nationally or regionally accredited by an agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. The AAfPE suggests these options to protect students from wasting time and money on a paralegal program not designed to appropriately prepare students with the practical job skills and legal theory education they need to be successful in the profession. With no standardization for paralegal education set, you really need to research the programs before selecting one.

The AAfPE also recommends earning an associate's or bachelor's degree with a major, minor or concentration in paralegal studies. A post-baccalaureate certificate or master's degree is also a recommended option for those already in possession of a bachelor's degree.

One of the more important considerations is where you want to work once you complete a program. Contact potential employers to find out what the demand is in the Maine marketplace for paralegals. Ask about required education and work experience. Legal field work experience is often required by employers.

Sandra Martinez, a Human Resources Assistant Manager at a large law firm in the Northeastern United States, suggests "Work with your school's career center or advisor to find internship opportunities at local firms or possibly with an employer you would like to work for after graduation. Most internships will require around 15 to 20 hours a week. This is an excellent way to gain valuable work experience that employers are looking for.
