Paralegal Programs in Nebraska

The state of Nebraska only has two schools that offer ABA approved paralegal programs, both of which are located in Omaha, NE. From a geographical standpoint, this could be somewhat challenging for those that live in the more rural parts of the state. It is for this reason that online paralegal programs are rapidly becoming more popular as well as more abundant. Though none of the online paralegal programs are ABA approved, the ones you find listed on this site are nationally and/or regionally accredited by a body recognized by the US Department of Education. For many potential employers these programs will suffice as such accreditation should ensure that you receive the necessary training you need to become a paralegal in Nebraska.

Currently, there are no regulations or rules set forth by the state of Nebraska when it comes to the education and training needed to become a paralegal. As in other states, attorneys are responsible for the supervision and all actions of their paralegal's, often referred to as "paraprofessionals". Those individuals with formal paralegal education and training may have the most opportunities.

Choosing the Right Paralegal Program

When you are searching for a paralegal program, there are a number of things to consider. First, as mentioned above, it is important to find out if the program is either accredited by an an accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education, a member of the American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPe), or approved by the ABA. Any or all of these accreditations can help ensure that the curriculum is designed around the appropriate topics and the education and training you receive is of the highest standards.

While you are researching schools and their programs, take some time to call or contact potential employers in your area or in the area where you intend to work as a paralegal. Inquire about the education and training requirements for the paralegals that they hire. Do they hire paralegals without any formal experience? If not, you might want to consider applying for an internship while you are in school. Often internships are unpaid, but they can help you gain the experience you need to be considered for employment. Also, ask if they have any specifications as to what type of paralegal programs they accept. Do they require that applicants attend an accredited program? If so, what type of accreditation will suffice? Do they consider applicants that have completed online paralegal programs? Is a paralegal certificate enough or do they prefer to hire candidates with an associate's or bachelor's degree in paralegal studies? Getting answers to these types of questions can help you narrow down your list of schools and make choosing the right paralegal program easier.

Last, but not least, when you are researching schools, make sure to find out what other types of student services the schools provide. As a paralegal student, it is important to have access to services such as career counseling, internship placement, financial aid, law libraries and other research based tools, and job placement assistance. Each of these services can help make your experience as a student more positive and can help set you on the right track towards your future as a paralegal.
