In some cases, sufficient expereince as a practicing paralegal may suffice. In support of that statement, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics recognizes that going forward those paralegals with formal education and training should see the most career opportunities.
The Ohio State Bar recognizes the importance of maintaining high standards for paralegals in the state. Because of this, they have created a credentialing program that allows Ohio paralegals to become certified. This opportunity is offered once a year. In order to become a certified paralegal, you must meet a number of education and expereince standards as well as pass an exam. Once you achieve the status of an "OSBA Certified Paralegal", your certification is good for four years.

Choosing a Paralegal Program in Ohio
Trying to decide what paralegal program to enroll in can be a daunting task. There are a number of things to look at when you are evaluating the different programs. First, and probably of primary importance, is to make sure that the program is accredited in some way. Consider choosing one that is ABA approved, a member of the AAfPE, or is accredited by a national or regional agency recognized by the US Department of Education. Accreditation or approval from these sources will help ensure that the curriculums offered are of high standard and will help adequately prepare you for your career as a paralegal.
There are a number of other questions you can ask to help narrow down your choices. Inquire about what types of services are made available to you as a student. Many schools offers free services such as tutoring, career counseling, financial aid, internships, and even job placement upon graduation. Find out what kind reputation of the school/program has in the legal community. Make sure the curriculum includes courses that teach actual skills that you will use in your job as well as legal theory. Some of the courses that should be included in the curriculum include litigation, legal writing and research, ethics, contracts, and torts.
One final thing to think about is whether you are interested in an online paralegal program or one that is taught in a classroom setting. Distance learning options are gaining in popularity due to the flexibility they can provide to you as a student. They are an excellent option for those that are employed full time, highly motivated, independent, and have a certian degree of self discipline.
