Paralegal Programs in Utah

Though there has been a push for the mandatory certification and regulation of paralegals for several years in Utah, there are no current licensing or regulation requirements today. What this means is that there are no specific guidelines pertaining to the level of education you must have or how much experience you need in order to be hired as a paralegal.

That being said, paralegals are held to high standards by members of the Paralegal Division of the Utah State Bar and the Legal Assistant Association of Utah. Both advocate becoming a Certified Legal Assistant or Certified Paralegal through the National Association for Legal Assistants. Both also emphasize the importance and continued need for paralegals with formal education, high skill sets, and a strong sense of professionalism. Though higher education and certification are not mandatory for paralegals in Utah, the most recent 2008 salary survey demonstrates that the majority of employers require a minimum education level and experience and both factor directly into compensation. According to Indeed.com, the average starting salary range for paralegals in Utah is between $40,000 and $55,000 per year. It appears that those individuals with formal education and experience tend to make higher starting salaries.

Utah Paralegal Education and Career Considerations

It can be said with certainty that pursuing an education in paralegal studies is beneficial, if not absolutely necessary. The next step is to find the program that is right for you. If you already have a bachelor's degree in another field, you may consider enrolling in a paralegal certificate program. If you haven't attended college, you may consider looking for a school that offers an associate's or bachelor's degree in paralegal studies. According to the most recent salary survey of paralegals in Utah, the majority of currently employed paralegals do hold some level of degree or certificate in paralegal studies. If you are uncertain, consider contacting a few potential employers in your area and ask them what type of education and experience they require to be considered for employment as a paralegal.

Once you have decided which type of paralegal program you are going to pursue, it is time to decide whether you are interested in enrolling in an online program or a more traditional campus based program. Distance learning paralegal programs have become increasingly popular. As a student, they provide you with a tremendous amount of flexibility by allowing you to complete coursework day or night at your own pace. This type of flexible schedule can give you more time to gain valuable work experience as an intern or employee at a law firm or government office while you are completing your education.

The American Association for Paralegal Education recommends choosing a paralegal program that is either ABA approved, a member of the AAfPE, or accredited by a national or regional agency recognized by the United States Department of Education. There is only one ABA approved program in Utah, however, there are a number of non-ABA approved online and campus based programs to choose from. Many of these schools are AAfPE members and all are accredited by an accrediting body approved by the U.S. Department of Education. Take some time to explore the paralegal programs below and request information from the schools that interest you to learn more.
