Choosing a Paralegal Studies Program in Wyoming
When it comes to choosing a paralegal program, your choices are numerous. There are some things to keep in mind that may help make your decision easier. For instance, if you think you may want to become a certified paralegal at some point, it is important to know that getting a formal paralegal education is a requirement. The National Association of Legal Assistants mandates that you have either an associate's or bachelor's degree in paralegal or legal studies coupled with varying degrees of experience. If you already have a bachelor's degree in another field you still must graduate from a paralegal education certificate program in order to sit for the certified legal assistant or certified paralegal (CLA/CP) exam.
Whether you intend on becoming a certified paralegal or not, a good thing to do is contact some potential employers in your area and ask them what their education and experience requirements are for the paralegals they hire. Do they require a 4 year bachelor's degree or will an associate's degree suffice? Do they hire paralegals without experience? If not, a good way to gain experience is to enroll in a program with an internship or practicum component. Another option is to attend a distance learning or online paralegal program. This can give you the added time and flexibility during the day to get a job or internship at a law firm or corporation thereby fulfilling valuable work experience requirements while you are going to school.
A final and significant thing to consider is enrolling in an accredited paralegal program. The American Association for Paralegal Education recommends choosing an American Bar Association approved program or one that is accredited by a national or regional accrediting agency that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and meets or exceeds the criteria required by the ABA. If the school is a member of the AAfPE, that is another positive indicator. There are only two ABA approved programs in Wyoming. It goes without saying that attending one of these two schools may be challenge for some, particularly from a geographical standpoint. Such geographical challenges have caused the popularity of online programs to increase dramatically over the last several years.
Each of the schools you see listed here are accredited on a regional or national level or have the approval of the ABA. Take some time to explore your options and request information from the schools that interest you to learn more about their paralegal programs.
